The Inspiration

The inspiration behind K. North is founder, Latarika Young’s, grandmother, Mrs. Emma. Mrs. Emma was a hard worker and would be considered a serial entrepreneur today. Starting at age 22, she worked in the medical field for 32 years as a surgical technician and finished as an ophthalmologist assistant. She retired at age 54 and opened a daycare out of her home for 20 years. As a career finale, she owned a pie and cake business out of her home for over 10 years, ending at age 84. When her health started to fail, Latarika didn’t want her to be completely stripped of the independence she had been used to her entire life.

As one of her caretakers, Latarika would stay overnight weekly and teach her how to use her iPad to accomplish everyday tasks she had been accustomed to in her life. She learned how to order and schedule delivery of her groceries online, how to listen to music and watch videos through apps like YouTube, and how to play games to pass the time. One of the pivotal moments for Latarika was one evening, when she arrived at her grandmother’s house, Mrs. Emma had already scheduled her groceries to be delivered without any assistance. She was able to use the notes created, and complete the task completely on her own. That awesome day became the primary inspiration for Kilpatrick North. Kilpatrick is the name of Latarika’s childhood street, now shortened to K. North.

I met Latarika Young at a community meeting that we both are members. Since I did not grow up with computers and have had to learn to use them, they often are confusing, intimidating and very complex to me. I have to admit at times even scary! My husband and I had moved his office printer to our home ( it worked there ) but would not work in our home. We had several technicians come fix it only to work until they were out of the door. I asked Latarika if she would come look at it when we were at a meeting one day. That very weekend she appeared at our home. She was kind, thoughtful, made us not feel stupid, and fixed the printer. She even taught us how to print from our phones! Her talented technical skills and especially her calm reassuring demeanor is just what anxious seniors like we needed. I highly recommend her services to a much needed group of eager seniors that want to not be threatened by a machine!
